Septic Tank Grants
Since 1st January, 2024, the Irish government have introduced a grant available to all householders within a “High Status Objective Catchment Area” of up to €12,000 for their Septic Tanks.

If you are located in one of the green areas then you are eligible.
THE STEPS TO RECEIVE A GRANT
1. An upgrade of your Septic Tank or domestic wastewater treatment (DWWTS) system is needed.
2. Confirm if dwelling is situated in a High Risk Area – check Eircode
3. Notify your County Council in writing of your intention to upgrade.
4. County Council then issues letter confirming eligibility to apply for a grant.
5. Carry out a Site Characterisation Assessment (Percolation Test).
6. Employ a suitable contractor to complete a Proposal for Works.
7. Submit Application Form and Proposal of Works to the County Council.
8. County Council carry out an inspection and approve the application.
9. Complete works and send Payment Claim Form to the County Council.
10. County Council re-inspects the works.
11. Grant is paid when works are in compliance with the Proposal of Works and the terms and conditions of the grant scheme.
HOW CAN SEWAGE SYSTEMS HELP YOU ?
1. Assist you in applying for a grant.
2. Offer any advice you need.
3. Carry out a Site Characterisation Assessment (Percolation Test).
4. Supply you with a Comprehensive Report including the Design of a Certified System.
5. Assist you in retaining a competent contractor to compile a Proposal of Works.
6. Decommission your old septic tank.
7. Supply and install new tanks and percolation units.
8. Provide Commissioning Paperwork and Maintenance Contracts.
9. Final Sign Off and Certification for county council.
What are the main Terms and Conditions of the Grant Scheme?
- There is NO requirement to have previously registered your septic tank or DWWTS.
- The grant is available to assist with the costs of remediation, repair or upgrading works to, or replacement of a septic tank or DWWTS.
- The level of grant available is 85% of the approved cost of the works, subject to a maximum of €12,000.
- All works must be in accordance with the EPA 2021 Code of Practice for DWWTS.
- Costs incurred for routine maintenance, servicing or de-sludging do not qualify.
- Planning Exemptions may apply under Section 4(1)(h) of the Planning and Development Act 2000.
- Tax clearance status of the contractor(s) required.
- Applicant must have received a letter from the County Council.
